CINEMA: Bulle FFCF 2010 #7 – Le bout de la jetée/The end of the pier

La cinquième édition du Festival Franco-Coréen du Film s’est achevée hier soir à l’Action Christine (Paris, France). Avant la projection du film de clôture, les membres des deux jurys ont tout d’abord décerné les prix :

The fifth edition of the French-Korean Film Festival came to an end last night at the Action Christine (Paris, France). Before the screening of the closing movie, the members of the two jurys awarded the winning films:

Prix Jeune Public – long métrage : Vegetarian de LIM Woo-seong (2009).
Prix Jeune Public – court-métrage : Somewhere Unreached de KIM Jae-won (2009).
Prix FlyAsiana – court-métrage : Suicide of the Quadruplets de KANG Jin-a (2008).

Remis par le réprésentant de la compagnie aérienne Asiana Airlines, sponsor du festival, le prix FlyAsiana consiste en un billet d’avion aller-retour Séoul/Paris afin que la réalisatrice KANG Jin-a puisse venir assister à la prochaine édition en 2011.

Film de clôture du festival, Break Away de LEE-SONG Hee-il appartient à ce genre de films coréens qui traitent de façon frontale du service militaire obligatoire en Corée, de certains abus graves qui se pratiquent dans les casernes et des conséquences psychologiques que ces abus entraînent sur les jeunes. Trois soldats désertent, chacun pour sa propre raison. Vivant dans l’ombre de son père, un militaire de carrière, Dong-min ne supporte plus les remontrances de ses officiers. Min-jae est régulièrement violé par un supérieur. Quant à Jae-hoon, on lui a refusé ses demandes de permission pour visiter sa mère atteinte d’un cancer en phase terminale et injoignable depuis plusieurs jours. À Séoul, So-young, la petite amie de Jae-hoon, leur vient en aide. Une chasse à l’homme impitoyable s’engage alors dans tout le pays pour retrouver les déserteurs et leur complice.

Davantage peut-être que les raisons pourtant fortes qui poussent les personnages à fuir l’armée, c’est avant tout la démesure de moyens et de violence que celle-ci met en oeuvre pour les retrouver qui choque. Présentés dans les media comme des criminels évadés de prison et traqués comme tels, les personnages n’ont aucun échappatoire ni aucun répit. La presqu’île coréenne est un étau géographique naturel, à l’image de sa chappe de plomb politique. Comme le fait remarquer So-young : “Ce foutu pays est trop petit.” La jetée où se conclut brutalement leur fuite est l’achèvement inéluctable d’un rêve de liberté presque accessible (le bateau qui doit les emmener en Chine, là-bas au-delà de l’horizon), mais néanmoins impossible dans un pays encore marqué par le souvenir d’une dictature de 30 ans.

Un film de clôture comme un coup de poing au moral, néanmoins parsemé de beaux mais brefs moments d’espoir (le premier baiser échangé par Jae-hoon et So-young, sales et blessés à l’arrière d’une voiture en fuite ; leur scène d’amour suggérée sur la plage) et de belles idées de mise en scène jouant souvent sur l’ellipse et le hors-champ (le policier abattu dans un champ lors d’une cavale ; So-young qui entre dans une banque où ses comparses tiennent déjà les employés en joue). Et on n’oubliera pas de sitôt cette réplique prophétique de Jae-hoon, murmurée dans un état second au milieu d’une cavale désespérée : “Le vent dans les feuillages, c’est le rire des mourants.”

Bestowed on by the representative of the festival’s sponsor Asiana Airlines, the FlyAsiana award consists in a return ticket from Seoul to Paris, given to director KANG Jin-a so that she may attend the next edition of the festival in 2011. Closing film of the festival, LEE SONG Hee-il’s Break Away belongs to this kind of Korean movies that deal head-on with the controvert mandatory military service, and also with certain serious abuses that are practiced in the barracks and of course with the psychological effects these abuses have on young people. Three soldiers desert, for their own reasons. Living in the shadow of his father, a career military man, Dong-min can no longer bear the remonstrances of his officers. Min-jae is regularly violated by a superior. As for Jae-hoon, he was denied his requests for permission to visit his mother who suffers from terminal cancer and who can’t be reached for several days. In Seoul, Jae-hoon’s love interest, So-young, agrees to help them. A ruthless manhunt begins throughout the country to find the deserters and their accomplice. Perhaps more significant than the yet grave reasons that lead the characters to escape the army, it is the excessive methods and violence the army uses to chase them that shocks the most. Presented in the media as criminals and tracked as if they were prison escapees, the characters have no escape and no respite. Just like the politics’ stranglehold on the people, the Korean peninsula is a natural geographical vise. As noted by So-young: “This damn country is too small.” The pier where their escape abruptly ends is the foregone conclusion of a dream of freedom they almost reach (the boat that will take them to China, over there beyond the horizon), but still an impossible one, in a country still marked by the memory of a 30-year-long dictatorship. A closing film like a punch to the morale, yet one that allows some beautiful but brief moments of hope to its characters (the first kiss shared by Jae-hoon and So-young, dirty and wounded in the back of the getaway car; their suggested love scene on the beach) and some nice mise-en-scene ideas often playing on the ellipse and the out-of-frame (the policeman shot dead in a field during a chase; So-young walking into a bank where her cronies are already holding the employees at gunpoint). And we won’t soon forget this prophetic line of dialogue murmured by a dazed Jae-hoon in the midst of a desperate runaway: “The wind in the trees is the laughter of the dying people.”
