Banter between couples in the Broadway musical of American composer and librettist Stephen Sondheim, A Little Night Music is freely adapted from a comedy by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, Smiles of a Summer Night. Our musical review staged by Lee Blakeley.

A Little Night Music :
A very cinematic cast

If the story is a classic and not surprisingly banter, led by the British director Lee Blakeley, the cast is very cinematic at the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris, France).

Indeed, the author of the play A Little Night Music, Stephen Sondheim, is particularly famous for having written the lyrics of West Side Story (1961) and the music of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007).

A beautiful voice casting

As for the actors, A Little Night Music has for its cast:

  • the legendary French-American actress Leslie Caron (Madame Armfeldt) played in the famous musical An American in Paris (1951) and Gigi (1958),
  • the so British French actor Lambert Wilson (Henrik Egerman) played in Same Old Song (1997) and Not one the Lips (2003),
  • and the Italian actress Greta Scacchi (Desiree Armfeldt) played in Presumed Innocent (1990) and The Player (1992).

Finally, for the voice, there are :

  • the British soprano Rebecca Bottone (Anne Egerman),
  • the British Francesca Jackson (Petra) and the American Deanne Meek (Countess Charlotte Malcolm) as mezzo-soprano,
  • the British bass-baritone Nicholas Garrett (Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm),
  • the British tenor David Curry (Henrik Egerman) and the young Celeste of Veazey (Fredrika Armfeldt).

A wonderful setting

The great success of this part of Broadway, Little Night Music, is the magnificent set of the British Rae Smith, where curtains come and go on stage to surreptitiously change the objects according to the plot while the direction of Lee Blakeley is changing makes the secondary characters like ghosts on stage around the main characters before the fireworks of paper and yellow color at the end of the first part. Opens the magnificent set of the countryside where tree roots are hovering above the scene.

Then we can be carried away by the famous song Send in the Clowns and the heady Remember?.
