CINEMA: I NEED A VINTAGE TRAILER #03 – « White Zombie » de/by Victor Halperin

Sorti en 1932, « White Zombie » de Victor Halperin est probablement le premier film de zombies de l’Histoire du cinéma. Film indépendant à petit budget inspiré d’une pièce de théâtre de Broadway, le film met en scène, sur fond de vaudou haïtien, un couple au prise avec un maléfique maître vaudou interprété par Béla Lugosi.
Si le film ne marque pas encore le passage définitif du cinéma fantastique au cinéma d’horreur, il va lancer un nouveau genre que les grands studios vont s’emparer une dizaine d’années après, avec notamment « Vaudou » (« I Walked with a Zombie », 1943) de Jacques Tourneur et Val Lewton pour la RKO. Low-budget independent film inspired by a Broadway play, the film tells, on a background of Haitian voodoo, the story of a couple at the hands of an evil voodoo master played by Béla Lugosi.
If the movie still does not mark a definite break from fantastique films to horror films, it will launch a new genre that major studios will continue a decade later, like « I Walked with a Zombie  » (1943) by Jacques Tourneur and Val Lewton for RKO. But this is another story. Back to the vintage!
