“Somewhere” by Sofia Coppola (2010)

Far from Venetian polemics where the film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, here is the fourth feature film directed by American director Sofia Coppola in which after Japan (“Lost in Translation”, 2003) and France (“Marie Antoinette”, 2006), she has been in Italy in the company of American actors Stephen Dorff (“Blade”, “Public Enemies”) and Elle Fanning (“Babel”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”).

French release on: 05/01/11.

“Even the rain” by Icíar Bollaín (“Tambien la lluvia”, 2010)

Screenplay written by British Paul Laverty, screenwriter of English director Ken Loach (“Sweet Sixteen”, “The Wind That Shakes the Barley”), “Even the rain” tells the incredible story of a few days when Indian and country men of Bolivia were against the privatization of water imposed by their government in 2000. Despite a history built on three levels (shooting of a period film during a social conflict), its cast of good Spanish actors (Gael García Bernal and Luis Tosar) and its beautiful image, we can regret that the film tells conventionally this revolt. Chosen by Spain to represent its country at the Oscars, “Even the rain” by Spanish director Icíar Bollaín is too attached to the exact reconstitution of the facts instead of to be, as Ken Loach’s films, closer to Indian players to tell us their story. So despite its qualities, this story will leave us on our thirst.

French release on : 05/01/11.
