Hiromasa Yonebayashi, parent of the funny and naive Arrietty: The small world of scroungers, is back with When Marnie Was There (思い出のマーニー, 2014), a second animated feature film and a beautiful adaptation of the novel When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson (1967), an English children’s classic book.
After The Wind Rises and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, the last works of Miyazaki-san and Takahata-san, When Marnie Was There leaves us with a sweet and childlike note, like a last goodbye, with its nostalgic title , already sounding like the announcement of the end of Studio Ghibli.
