Made with a budget of 25,000 dollars for six days of shooting, the film Deep Throat (1972) by Gerard Damiano has grossed over $ 600 million thirty years later (see Wikipedia). The biopic Lovelace (2013) by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (The Celluloid Closet, Paragraph 175) invites us to follow the meteoric rise of a naive and shy American young woman who became suddenly a porn star.

Plot:

At the end of the 1960s, Linda (Amanda Seyfried) smothers in a family in which her mother (Sharon Stone), as rigid as her religious principles, rules it with an iron fist. She is a beautiful 20 years old girl, ready to embrace life with enthusiasm despite her shyness and innocence. When she meets Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard), she does not resist to his virile charisma, leaves the family home to marry him and learns with him a freedom that she hardly suspected…

Lovelace:
The other side of a success story

The film Lovelace begins by retelling the official story of the girl, nicknamed Linda Lovelace (played by Amanda Seyfried): a teenager girl, facing the rigor of her parents, meets her mentor and future husband, Chuck Traynor (played by Peter Sarsgaard), who makes her to get in the porn industry and made her a star. So far, the film is linear and predictable and the grain of the image, effect “70’s”, is a bit too much.

But the feature film Lovelace changes when it is based on the biography written afterwards by Linda Lovelace, Ordeal. Under the lights of success, we discover the rapes and abuses she has suffered from. The second part gives a more interesting approach of the myth and is more fascinating.

A movie deeper
than it looks like

If the end could have been more controversial, the film has the merit of showing a contrasting portrait of a young girl whose only fault was to want to live her life to the fullest. In a society where women still had to respect her husband, Linda Lovelace became a militant figure of feminism and aigainst the porn industry.

Well played by Amanda Seyfried and her partners, Lovelace is a little more deeper than it looks like.
