CINEMA: « 2/Duo » de/by Nobuhiro Suwa (1997)

2/Duo (2/デュオ, 1997) est l’histoire contrariée et violente de deux jeunes amoureux : Yu Yu (Yu Eri), vendeuse dans une boutique de vêtements, et Kei (Nishijima Hidetoshi), acteur fauché qui vit à ses crochets.
Avec un cadrage souvent fixe et l’utilisation d’un seul objectif de caméra, Nobuhiro Suwa filme et interroge ce couple comme un laborantin étudierait ses souris. Mais comme toute expérience, celle-ci a ses limites. D’un côté, elle brouille avec succès la frontière entre réel et fiction par l’utilisation de longs plan-séquences et de l’insertion de fausses interviews-confessions des personnages. De l’autre, l’abandon du scénario au profit d’une écriture improvisée au jour le jour provoque inévitablement longueurs et détours inutiles.
Si ces choix esthétiques peuvent dérouter ou séduire, ils n’en sont pas moins une intéressante réflexion sur un couple en crise.

2/Duo (2/デュオ, 1997) is a difficult and violent story of two young lovers Yu Yu (Yu Eri), a saleswoman in a clothing store, and Kei (Hidetoshi Nishijima), an actor who scrounges on her.

With an often fixed framing and the use of a single camera lens, Nobuhiro Suwa shot and questions this couple as a laboratory assistant would study his mouses. But like any experiment, it has its limitations. On the one hand, it successfully blurs the line between reality and fiction through the use of long sequence-length shots and insertion of false confessions-interviews of the characters. On the other hand, the abandonment of the script in favor of an impromptu writing inevitably causes more tedious moments and unnecessary detours.
If these aesthetic choices can confuse or seduce, they are nevertheless an interesting reflection on a couple in crisis.
