[REVIEW] “The Sleeping Beauty” (2010) by Catherine Breillat

After Bluebeard (2009), French director Catherine Breillat (Romance, The Last Mistress) revisits once again fairy tales and signs a free adaptation of two of them: The Sleeping Beauty (La Belle endormie) by Charles Perrault and The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen.

Plot:

When the Princess Anastasia, six years old (Carla Besnaïnou), was sentenced to one hundred-year sleep by the Wicked fairy godmother (Odile Mallet), three young fairies (Camille Chalons, Dounia Sichov, Leslie Lipkins) give her the power to dream until her sixteen (Julia Artamonov)…

Best known for her approach of teenagers and young adults sexuality, Catherine Breillat is interested especially in The Sleeping Beauty in the wonderful dreams of the little princess in her sleep. Best part of the TV film, Catherine Breillat takes us with surprise and pleasure on the trail of a little princess cursed and loved by fairies.
