Tolkien season 2 episode 2: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013). With this second opus of The Hobbit trilogy, Peter Jackson continues to illustrate the universe of J. R. R. Tolkien with a fifth film still full of action and special effects. Film review by Bulles de Culture.

Plot:

The film continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: a more feminine cast

Dr. Watson … sorry, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is back with his friends the dwarves and the wizard. And as an episode of season 1 of the series Lost, they pursue their goal not achieved in the first episode (The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey, 2012), that is to say, to go to the Lonely Mountain to recover the ring.. ah, no it is done! … so to grab the white stone, the Arkenstone, a symbol of power among dwarves, while the Forces of evil are increasingly present.

Let’s be honest: it is not easy to be interested in these Hobbit adventures where the script links one after an other physical obstacles on the way of the characters but never confronts them with more psychological choices. There is also the problem of a too strong dichotomy where the nice guys are the nice guys and the bad guys are the bad guys. This black and white without contrast misses the grayscale of a character like Gollum — although for this character, this opposition is pushed to schizophrenia.

Good point on the other hand: during a period of “Mariage pour tous” (aka “marriage for all”) in France, the cast is a little more feminine with a new character of female warrior, two little girls — of a widower, of course, with the few women present in the films — and a gossip woman — it is well known: woman are chatting all the time!

An end that leaves you hungry

Finally, if Peter Jackson made us leave the first episode (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) on a dragon’s eye full of promises, he leaves us in the lurch in the second one with an incredibly disappointing last line by Bilbo Baggins. Obviously, what finally amuses Peter Jackson in this business, it is not to tell a story where the good guys never die — and if they do, it is because they had sinned — and where the bad guys are slaughtered, but rather to illustrate the rich universe of J. R .R. Tolkien and shot the beautiful mountains of his country (New Zealand).

In short, we like it or not, we must acknowledge him the ability to materialize, with more or less success, a world that he (as well as millions of other readers) has read and imagined when he was a child. But is it enough? On the face of it, no but we can perhaps wait for the next episode before making a final decision.
