CINEMA: BISFF 2012 #05, l'imagination au pouvoir/the power of imagination‏ 3 image

Screened in the Competition n°11, “Kedi” by Stefan Neuberger begins like a film that we’ll have to endure, with its succession of long, fixed close-ups of Turkish people telling stories, intertwined with long, fixed shots of Istanbul street cats. And then we quickly understand the film’s concept: each of the interviewed persons is asked to tell a cat-related imaginary story but must begin it using the ending of the previous person’s story. That “cadavre exquis” narration becomes either surprising, moving or amusing depending on who’s telling the story. Their imagination being their souls’ reflections, we learn more about them than we would have if the director had simply asked them about their life. In the end, they all open their eyes and stare right at the camera: they don’t appear to us as mere documentary interviewees, they appear as relatives. Acting as their personal totems, the street cats shots each correspond to whoever is telling the story at the time. A simple yet rigourous aesthetic serving a true documentary idea and, hopefully, a prize for its well-deserving director.

The other films in the Competition No. 11 were:

“The Small Escape” (“La Petite Évasion”, Sébastien Simon): perhaps the shortest film of the entire selection, this is a simple and joyful film on the escape of a tortoise and a poodle with a background of end of the human world. The contrast between the background and the story deserves more resources and a slightly longer duration to really convince, but the director obviously had a great time to lead his young actors with hair and scales – and we, to look at them escaping.

“On the Other Side of You” (Lee Juyoung): while a young woman is trying to be hired in a company, an employee is hesitating to resign. Symmetry of loneliness, and a heart-breaking: the death of a kitten and its burial in a wood, which mark the end of the casual and adolescent to enter adulthood and responsibility.

“You Promised Me” (Pil Gamsung): a boss rather tough with his employees is trying an alcohol brought by prospective Indian partners and is beginning to see the ghost of an employee who recently died and who has been probably unfairly dismissed. He receives SMS’s from the dead man about a promise he has not held and for which he will pay the price. The film is well played and lighted but the story is predictable and does not avoid all the clichés.
