Introduction

In 2009, a “guerrilla marketing campaign”1 is organized in the U.S. and UK: there are posters everywhere in the largest cities (bus stops, building walls, benches, etc..) to delimit restricted areas for humans and encourage the denunciation of non-humans2 ; and three websites for and against non-humans are created3. The original campaign precedes the release of the debut of a young South African director of twenty-nine years: Neill Blomkamp. His film District 9 was produced by Peter Jackson for 30 million dollars4 and bring more than 200 million worldwide5.

Born in Johannesburg in 1979, Neill Blomkamp has lived 18 years in South Africa before leaving to study in Canada. Winner of the 1998 Section 3D Animation and Visual Effects of Vancouver Film School, he began as a special effects (TV series like Smallville and Stargate SG-1) before moving to direction with short films (Adicolor) , advertising (Citroën) and music videos6. It was after failing to adapt in feature film the video game Halo: Land fall7 initiated by Peter Jackson that Jackson will propose to him to produce his first feature film. At the initiative of the wife of Peter Jackson, the producer and screenwriter Fran Walsh, Neill Blomkamp will continue to work on one of his short films of science fiction, Alive in Joburg (2005): “To Alive, I wanted to show the madness of American and British SF scene in a third World “8.
Unidentified Film Object, District 9 is a fantastic thriller in his original treatment of the history of a country, a genre (science fiction) and theme (otherness). We shall endeavor to demonstrate the originality of this work by an aesthetic approach (documentary and fiction), politics (otherness) and sociological (identity).
