– Maggie Gyllenhall dans une interprétation sensible de femme forte, jeune journaliste ambitieuse et mère célibataire froissée par la vie, rôle qui lui a valu une nomination aux Oscars dans la catégorie meilleure actrice, récompense décernée à Sandra Bullock (cf. CINEMA: OSCARS 2010 – Kathryn Bigelow, reine de l’année) ;
– Collin Farell dans le rôle du jeune musicien qui a tout appris du maître Bad Blake et qui l’incite à réécrire. L’acteur y est pour une fois très juste et ça lui va bien ;

1961, Angleterre. Jenny (Carey Mulligan) a 16 ans.

“An education”, England 60s

1961, England. Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is 16. Brilliant student, she is preparing to get into Oxford. Her encounter with a man, David (Peter Sarsgaard), twice her age, is going to change everything. In a world that is getting ready to experience the madness of the 60s, in a country that goes from “Lady Chatterley” to the Beatles, Jenny is going to discover life, love, Paris, and to have to choose its existence.

Based on the autobiography of the British journalist Lynn Barber, “An Education” tells the story of the transition to adulthood of a young girl and the birth of the 60s in England. On a music tinged with French songs (Juliette Greco), the film quietly tell its old plot of initiation between London and Paris and if we do not necessarily be educated at the end, we can easily be charming by the two main actors, the mischievous Carey Mulligan (Oscar nomination) and the mysterious Peter Sarsgaard (“Boys Do not Cry”, “In the Electric Mist”).

“A Single Man”, a death in colors

Los Angeles, 1962. Since he lost his partner Jim (Matthew Goode) in an accident, George Falconer (Colin Firth), Professor of Columbia University, feels unable to face the future. Solitaire despite the support of his friend, the beautiful Charley (Julianne Moore) who is facing her own questions about her future, George can not imagine that a series of events will lead him to decide that there may be a life after Jim.

First movie of the great American designer Tom Ford, “A Single Man” follows step by step the last day of George Falconer before his suicide, explaining with flashback what have lead him to this act. With a single broken character, a film almost black and white, Tom Ford shot closest the distress of George (excellent Colin Firth) that even his best friend Charley (an amazing Julianne Moore, far from her usual part of mother model in “Far From Heaven” and “The Hours”) will not save.
Dressed by Tom Ford himself, George, by deciding to end its days, may finally grasp the present surroundings, the colors are more present in an image close to the previously black and white (a process already used in “Pleasantville” but still beautiful), including the magnificent scene in all colors and full of desires between George and a young man (Jon Kortajarena) on the parking of a supermarket.

With music including composer Shigeru Umebayashi (“In the Mood for Love”), who heady title of “Carlos” was used to the trailer, “A Single Man” is a beautiful melodrama about a lonely human being who will not be able to live with a broken heart.

“Crazy heart”, one day at a time

Whiskey, we know, for keeping the hoarse voice of a country singer, there’s nothing better! Yes but at almost 60 years and a liver that fails, Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges), fallen star of country music, is forced to admit that he must change his lifestyle, beginning with stop waking up every day after concert in a seedy motel room along with an old discomfited fan, a McClure’s corpse in his arms.

This adaptation of the novel “Crazy Heart” by Thomas Cobb tells how, after a good encounter and a car accident (drinking and driving, you must choose!), our anti-hero, fallen idol of the American heartland, is trying to resume his life in hand one day at a time as his best friend (Robert Duvall) repeats it to him, manager of the old bar which hosts him on stage every Friday night. One foot in plaster, trying to stop the whiskey and self-destruction, the character takes the time to live, love and begins to compose again…

With his false air of “Wrestler”, actor Jeff Bridges plays here a poignant character who clings to his guitar to quit alcohol. With his tired power, the actor lends his physique and his voice to this character affecting in seeking redemption.

To complete the cast, we find:
– Maggie Gyllenhall in a sensitive interpretation of strong woman, ambitious young journalist and single mother bruised by life, a role which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best actress award, given to Sandra Bullock (see CINEMA: OSCARS 2010 – Kathryn Bigelow, queen of the year);
– Colin Farell in the role of the young musician who has learned all from master Bad Blake and who incites him to rewrite. The actor is once very fair and it suits him;
– The great Robert Duvall, always impeccable in the role of best friend bar manager.

CINEMA: BULLES DE COMPTOIR "A Single Man", "Crazy heart", "Une éducation"/"An education" 6 imageI must admit it is nice to find Jeff Bridges denigrating the bowling which serve as concert hall (nod to “The Big Lebowski” by the Coen brothers), in this deeply human interpretation, rewarded by Oscar Best Actor in 2010 (nominated shoulder to shoulder with Colin Firth for his role while retained in the film of the designer Tom Ford, “A Single Man”).

The film also won the Oscar for best original song for “The Weary Kind” by T-Bone Burnett, played by Ryan Bingham, but the soundtrack in its entirety is very good, recalling the great soundtracks of “Into the Wild” by Eddie Wedd (leader of Pearl Jam) or the one of “Brokeback Mountain” by Gustavo Santaolalla. The common point you ask? The contemplative landscapes on the road if conducive to the blues.

We find again the actor on the big screen in the interpretation of a military hippie in the film by Grant Heslov, “Men who stare at goats”, thus completing a superb cast consisting of Kevin Spacey, Ewan McGregor, George Clooney… and a goat.
And for a date not yet defined, be aware that 2011 should be marked by the actor’s comeback with the Coen brothers in “True Gift”, a remake of the western by Henry Hathaway, in which he should resume the role required at the time by John Wayne.
