For all the lucky ones who got to watch this film, Jens Assur’s gut-wrenching “Killing the Chicken to Scare the Monkeys” (see CINEMA: BISFF 2012 #03, end slate in three steps) won an obvious and well-deserved Grand Prize of the Festival. Unfortunately absent from the festival, the Swedish director was however contacted by Cha Minchol, the head of programming. A very nice idea, their phone conversation was recorded and then played in the main theater to the audience, bemused with Mr Cha’s adorably zen and irresistible English diction.

The same occured for the moving “Grandmothers” by Afarin Eghbal (UK, best experimental film), whose young director sounded particularly enthusiastic, and the hilarious “Flamingo Pride” by Tomar Eshed (Germany, Best animation film, see CINEMA: BISFF 2012 #03, end slate in three steps). However, it had not been possible to reach Ammar al-Beik (Syria), Jury Prize with “The Sun’s Incubator”.

Sharing it with her fellow countryman LEE Jeong-hong (“No Cave’), LEE Woo jung (South Korea) got the Best Film Prize for “See you tomorrow” ; her actresses Lee Min-ji, Jang Euiyoung, Park Kyunghye shared Best Interpretation Prizes.

Romany Saad (Egypt) got the best Fiction Prize for “Cold January” (see CINEMA: BISFF 2012 #04, the act of looking).
Kangyu Garam (South Korea) got the Best documentary Prize for “My Father’s House”.
Joe Seungyeon (South Korea) got the Cinema technology Prize for “33Li”.
Bae Byung-gun (South Korea) got the Operation Kino for student films Prize with “Soombi sori Echo”.

“Les Condiments Irréguliers” (Adrien Beau)

Present at the festival and particularly moved, the French director Adrien Beau got the Prize delivered by a jury composed of Busan students for his “Irregular Seasonings”. In this dialogueless film, which is loosely based on the life and death of the Marquise de Brinvilliers, a 17th century poisoner of her whole family, the actors only use their facial expressions and body movements, gladly overacting, sometimes dansing. A truly curious period film.

As a whole, the list of awarded films is a very coherent one. Obviously concerned by political issues (Arabian revolution in “Cold January” and “The Sun’s Incubator”; death penalty in China with “Killing the Chickens…”; Argentina’s movement of the Mothers of the May square in “Grandmothers”), but also touched by more personal issues (financial crisis seen through a family bankrupcy in “My Father’s House”; social alienation in “No Cave”), the list clearly reflects its jury composed of commited and humanist documentary filmmakers. In her speech prior to delivering the awards, Dominique Cabrera stressed out that this list doesn’t award the “best” films but simply that it embodies the personnality of these three jurors. Like in any meal, she said: “some dishes were delicious, some were rather salty, others rather sweet, and a few one were downrigth impossible to swallow… but to everybody his own taste!”

We’re looking forward to next year’s edition of this pleasant festival : in 2013, the guest-of-honour country will be China.
